I have no special talents. I am only passionately curious.

In our obscure life, for instance, how easy
it is to turn from the masters falling into the sea.
No doubt they were amazing—
the whiteness of their legs in the green water!—
but it is not an important failure.
The living eat a cold peach
delicious from the refrigerator or
cleanse the intricate joints of an engine
in pure gasoline, and its vapors rise
like barely visible snakes
finally lost in the sun.
It is also good
to teach a child to sing
with words or without,
to love and afterwards
go slowly hand in hand
for a swim in the astringent ocean.

I just think that some things are meant to be broken. Imperfect. Chaotic. It’s the universe’s way of providing contrast, you know? There have to be a few holes in the road. It’s how life is.
By nature, we do not perceive ourselves or others accurately. We magnify the importance of ourselves and diminish that of others. In the beauty of a clear night, however, we look at the stars and feel ourselves small, unimportant, and at peace. On an objective scale, we sense our insignificance. Somehow the realization comforts us. The return of the illusion hurts us, takes our peace away, allows us to magnify slights, rejections, and humiliations as others challenge the illusion of our self-importance with theirs. It is in our human nature that this be so; it is our task to transcend it.

This is what life does. It lets you walk up to
the store to buy breakfast and the paper, on a
stiff knee. It lets you choose the way you have
your eggs, your coffee. Then it sits a fisherman
down beside you at the counter who says,’ Last night,
the channel was full of starfish,’ And you wonder,
is this a message, finally, or just another day?

Hey, we’re coming out
Dancing downtown
Free like whatever we dream about
And we’re moving through the night
Cruising across town,
Lost in the endless sound
And the sea’s alright
But the streets are all safe
And you know deep down
You can find a better way
Tired of feeling bad
So don’t you wonder why
You keep telling yourself it’s alright

When the stars are shining on you
When the street lights are far beyond you
When the dream lights are turning on
Then you know where you are
When the stars are shining brighter
When your heart is beating lighter
When you love without desire
Then you know who you are
